PROBLEMA
O Windows 2000 passou a entrar em modo de segurança em uma máquina e
aproveitei para convencer o usuário a usar Linux. Ao instalar o Linux
(tentei Debian Sarge e BR-CDD pre 6) mensagens de erro rolavam sem parar
na console (em todas que estivessem abilitadas) depois do primeiro boot
e impediam a conclusão da instalação. As mensagem de erro podem ser
vistas no final deste texto.
DIAGNÓSTICO
Estressei memória e CPU por 12 horas cada e nenhuma mensagem de erro foi
exibida. Analizando as mensagens de erro que rolavam na console, parecia
tratar-se de algum problema com o barramento USB.
A tentativa de desabilitar o uso de USB na BIOS falhou pois o Linux faz
o reconhecimento de hardware sem consultar a BIOS.
SOLUÇÃO
Todas as respostas obtidas na listan indicavam a utilização do parâmetro
*nousb* durante a instalação, mas mesmo que este parâmetro fosse
utilizado o problema persistia. Utilziar o parâmetro
debian-installer/probe/usb=fase também não resolvia
Pesquisando um pouco mais as mensagens de erro, descobri a URL
http://www.ic.unicamp.br/~norton/debian_acer_aspire_1355LC.html#memus
que indicava poder tratar-se de conflito entre USB e ACPI. Com isto
instalei o Sarge com a parametrização que se segue, considerando que meu
hardware não tem PCMCIA nem SCSI e que *o barramento USB realmente está
com problemas*
:linux26 nosub noacpi nopcmcia noscsi.
Apesar das mensagens de erro ainda surgirem uma ou duas vezes, o boot
prossegue normalmente. Assim, foi possível concluir a instalação do
Sarge e utilizá-lo (inclusive a interface gráfica).
CURIOSIDADE
Tinha uma impressora USB ligada na porta USB do micro e esta solução só
funcionou depois que eu desconectei o cabo. Se o cabo USB for colocado
de volta, mesmo com a impressora desligada, as mensagens de erro começam
a rolar de nova e o sistema não entra no ar. Alguém sabe por que isto
acontece? Suspeito que tenha algo haver com a sinalização nos
dispositivos USB, mas queria os detalhes.
