O principio básico é explicado em " FAM comes in two parts: fam, the daemon that listens for requests and delivers notification, and libfam, a library that client applications can use to communicate with fam." A uma entrada no apt-cache show a respeito da interacao com o kernel "If the kernel supports dnotify (kernels >= 2.4.x) FAM is notified directly by the kernel. Otherwise it has to poll the files' status. FAM can also provide a RPC service for monitoring remote files (such as on a mounted NFS filesystem)."
