Aqui vai uma receita de bolo, que funciona na maioria dos casos...
Primeiro, atualize o md5sum do arquivo XF86Config-4, para que o debconf
volte a atualiza-lo automaticamente:
md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
>/var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum
Segundo, instale esses pacotes aqui, cujo objetivo é ajudar a
autodetectar o seu hardware de vídeo
apt-get install xdebconfigurator read-edid mdetect
hwinfo discover1 kudzu
Terceiro, reconfigure seu XServer utilizando o dpkg
dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xfree86
Deve funcionar... mas atenção, você não vai ter aceleração 3D, pois o
XServer que vem padrão no Debian é o OpenSource, que não dá suporte ao
OpenGL. Culpe a nVidia, pra ter 3D você precisa instalar o nvidia-glx(xserver)
e o nvidia-kernel-source(módulo)... pra compilar esse módulo,
use um programinha chamado module-assistant.

O Erro propriamente dito:
Chamo o xf86config e vou seguindo os passos normalmente e configurando
de acordo com o meu computador, depois de finalizado e salvo o arquivo,
chamo o XFree86 -configure para criar o arquivo .new e fazer pequenos
ajustes e depois renomeá-lo para XFree86config-4 ele me dá o seguinte
erro:
