That's it. It was installed as 700. Changed to 755 and KDE works great. Gnome is another story though. I have already had to apt-get "gnome-session" and it looks like I am still missing packages required to run Gnome. Since I am used to using KDE this is fine for now. Thanks, Jim Seymour
