I've never tried the new installer. Maybe its something to do with the differences between kernel 2.4 and 2.6. Kernel 2.4 used LVM-1, Kernel 2.6 used device mapper which was lower level and more generic than the fomer. Both need different kernel modules (2.4 need lvm_mod and 2.6 need dm_mod), and I think the user-side packages are different too. Hope this helps.
