downloaded libxml2-2.6.4.tar.gz and libxslt-1.1.2.tar.gz from http://xmlsoft.org built src files from tar balls, and ran ldconfig, after which apt-get -f install worked, apt-get -f dist-upgrade installed all of gnome..etc. -Mel
