Right, and that gap is going to continue to grow between those elderly
arches (sparc32, m68k) and the mainstream arches...

If you want to use an open source OS for this old architectures, I
think NetBSD ist the way to go . Since the same team build the kernel
and distribute the OS, there is no such problem as " lack of upstream
support" in kernel developpment.
