Further to the discussion I started here on 6th.Dec.2002 about the problem of the stable Snort packages being out-of-date, with the subject "Updating Snort Signatures In Stable ?" (http://lists.debian.org/debian-security/2002/debian-security-200212/msg00063.html) FYI, I have now submitted a severity=minor bug, #173254, suggesting the packages.d.o web-page for Snort be annotated to warn new users that the package is deprecated in favour of V1.9.0 from www.snort.org.
The maintainer, Sander Smeenk, has already replied, agreeing with most points that people raised, but advising that he doesn't believe he has the power to have such a warning added to this page, and that perhaps the Debian webmaster should be asked to make the amendment. (See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=173254). I assume a Debian developer would be needed to make such a request to the webmaster. Actually, I wonder whether the package pages _can_ be annotated like this, if they're automatically generated from the package data - but I guess it's worth asking the webmaster. Maybe there's room for at least a pointer to a page elsewhere holding the warning. Sander's preferred option would be to remove the Snort package altogether in these circumstances. What would be quicker : remove the package, or add the warning to the web-page ? I guess we ought to do *something*. Comments ?
