I use the /etc/init.d/iptables script to start, stop, save, etc my firewalling directives. Once my rules seems OK, I run '/etc/init.d/iptables save active', and each time my system boots up (Once a year...), it load the correct file. There is 'active' and 'inactive' ruleset, and 2 other states (I can't remember exactly the names) of firewalling ruleset. My 2 cents. -- THE OLD POOL SHOOTER had won many a game in his life.
