You might want to avoid this unpleasant situation next time by reconfiguring xinetd so that it does NOT try to regenerate a xinetd.conf from inetd.conf data after an upgrade. Thus, answer "No" at the prompt issued by dpkg-reconfigure -pmedium xinetd. -- Thomas Seyrat.
