Hi Scott, As you can see on the upstream report [1], I am afraid that this exposes a real bug somewhere in writing or reading FITS files or in the checksum calculation. Since this may lead to data loss, I don't want to make 0.3.1 enter testing unless I get a clear response that everything is OK here, so that they close the issue. astropy-0.4 is on the way during the next month anyway, and 0.3.2 is finallizing, so I hope that there is something in there.
