Just confirmed that this is still present in unstable with gcc-4.8 4.8.2-17 - ifneq (,$(filter $(ARCHITECTURE), armhf arm64)) + ifneq (,$(filter $(ARCHITECTURE), armhf)) on line 35 of debian/rules allows the build to work with current gcc.
