$ mpicxx.mpich2 -compile-info
c++ -g -O2 -g -O2 -I/usr/include/mpich2 -L/usr/lib -lmpichcxx -lmpich -lopa
-lmpl -lrt -lcr -lpthread
Thus programs compiled with mpicxx.mpich2 will include debugging info. My guess

that this was not intended and is a bug?

This was fixed (again) a few years ago with this change:
Unset CFLAGS etc. Otherwise Debian build flags end up as default
flags used by e.g. mpicc.
