По опыту, с HylaFAX лучше и устойчивее работает программный режим факса,
"Class 1". А это таки значительно упрощает выбор модема, хотя тонкости есть:

It means that the Zyxel Class 1 firmware strips the two FCS bytes from
the end of the HDLC frame. To compensate you must put:
Class1FrameOverhead: 2
into your etc/config.<devid> file and restart faxgetty.
