That's possible as well, of course. In this case you should revert to sysvinit (or upstart) straight after upgrading, *before* you reboot (after it's too late). I documented the manual upgrade fix on the LP bug a while ago: https://launchpad.net/bugs/953875 (in the description). Maybe some bits could also be stolen from there.
