TL;DR - it seems like this bug is faster to fix (based on the subject of #774890) than it is to argue over whether it needs to be fixed? If it is truly just a regular dir -> symlink transition, please just implement it (using dpkg-maintscript-helper) and request an unblock for it. It would apparently also do some of our long term users a favour. :) If there is some reason why it is more difficult to solve, please - by all means highlight and I will revisit the situation.
