It appears that the patch[1] applies and works as-is, at least in my test case with evince. debian/symbols.common also needs to be adjusted, as the symbols were added to it. Now, question for the release team: would you be okay with going ahead and dropping the above symbols from libgs that were wrongly exported in the first place? in *squeeze*. I haven't checked what other binary links to both libjpeg and libgs and that could trigger this bug.
