Both libjpeg8-dev and libjpeg62-dev contains the same filenames, with different content (e.g. /usr/lib/libjpeg.a) > Is libjpeg8-dev really API incompatible or is it just nice to have > another name? It is API compatible. As I said, I have rebuilt locally the 311 packages that build-depends on libjpeg62-dev against libjpeg8-dev, so there is no risk of API incompatibility.
