Giving the maintainers of the depending packages a bit of warning in advance makes transitions like this go smoother. I'm a bit unsure how to proceed, cc'ing -release for opinion. I'm myself inclined to remove it and file RC bugs on depending packages, no packages having an upload since 2003 are still depending on this...
