Did you do dist-upgrade? I simple upgrade might not find a proper solution because several packages need to be removed. It is really hard to debug this, and in general it seems to be an apt problem not being able to find a solution, while there definitely is one, as you have shown yourself by installing it afterwards ;-) So, without more debugging - and that is not possible since you have already upgraded your system, it is really hard to say why all this happened.
