This bug is still reproducible. kmimetypefinder reports a MIME type for a non-existing file. Reassigning to kde-runtime.

The behavior that you describe is working as intended, you might want to use: In order to check the content of the file to obtain the mimetype, instead of using the filename and the content (if available), or using plain file.
