The point is that the workload of verifying hundreds of bugs can be distributed to the reporters. Furthermore there is the slight possibility that you have some special case and the thing wasn't reproducable for others due to different conditions. In that case you would not want to see reports closed only because others cannot reproduce the issues. Therefor it is good to ask the reporter if the issue still exists.
