I have exactly the same. It crashes in most cases immediately after starting. Starting a second time it will live in most cases.
I think 6 months ago or I did not have this problem, but so much as changed since then in lenny... It does not seem to depend on the host because it happens to both debian and XP vnc server. However in all cases across openvpn. So a packet may get lost now and then. On the other hand: Terminal Server Client works fine, and I think both use the same underlying vnc client. I do prefer krdc since it appears to be faster (to the debian server) and I can send <ctrl-alt-del> to the XP, to unlock the remote screen.
