Remember auto-expunge=false in my original posting? When I flipped it to auto-expunge=true (which was the way kmail originally writes it out in kmailrc), the bug stopped manifesting itself.
As with the current GUI it looks like it's impossible to get into the auto-expunge=false mode (unless it's carefully hidden somewhere I didn't notice), you might want to demote the bug to wishlist.
