after running an upgrade on sarge/testing I had the same problems as mentioned above (kdm_greet taking approximately 1 minute to start, using 100% cpu). indeed running 'dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig' solved that problem and brought it back to a few seconds. It may be an idea to update the kdm postinstall script for this.
