I think that IMAP access is pretty fundamental to KMail.  If it's not going to 
pop up a message saying something to the effect of "You can't check mail 
across this type of protocol without installing the kdepim-kio-plugins 
package" then kdepim-kio-plugins should be installed by default along with 
KMail.

Just a frustrated user, who thought the latest KMail was totally messed up and 
had to look around Google for 10 minutes to get his mail working.

PS - Changing programming methods to check messages should remain transparent 
to the user.  This bug falls under that cateogory.
