both. mgetty.info explains how cls2 is the only way to go and how cls1
will never be supported. I remember having some problem with hylafax,
too, but it was before mgetty, and thus not as strong in my memory.

Could be smth other than the cls1. Reading your doc link it looks
like it is possible indeed. mgetty+fax definitely won't work.

In both cases, efax is much more friendly for an average desktop user,
even if the modem is supported.
