freefont only adds the new FontPath to /etc/X11/XF86Config
but not to /etc/X11/xfs/config.
IMHO decision where to add the new fontpath should run like this

I'm not sure if problems arise when xfs and freefont are installed in one
run. The xfs preinst and postinst renames its config file. Maybe the changes
freefont does could get wiped out by this.

freefont is orphaned, and I closed these bugs in a QA upload recently.
Due to bug #71600 in dinstall, they were only tagged as fixed, so I'm
closing them by hand.

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 so that the X Window System should pick
them up by default, shipping fonts.scale instead of fonts.dir and
calling appropriate font utilities, and updating dependencies
(closes: #5511, #10950, #29570, #36777, #86078).
- Converted to debhelper so I get dh_installxfonts, among other things.
* Removed spurious debian/substvars file.
