I'm the (prospective) new ispell maintainer, and I agree with Charles' comments about update-ispell-dictionary's behavior ... I will try and make it more standard without breaking the traditionally expected behavior; Charles, I'll write to you if I get stuck. Thanks. (P.S. I'm experimentally yada-izing ispell.)
