crash is very picky about the gdb source version it wants. There's hard-coding in the Makefile and also a local gdb-x.y.patch file and the build will most likely fail if the GDB version is different. If you build upstream crash it downloads the exact gdb tarball first.
I expect gdb-source version to be different (and potentially moving) so using that will be painful.
