Package: tkcvs
Version: 8.2.3-1
Severity: wishlist

The tkcvs source package bundles a copy of Paul Mackerras' tkdirdiff
program in the contrib/ subdirectory. As of the current version of tkcvs
in sid, the bundled script has the header

    # Copyright (C) 1999-2002 Paul Mackerras. All rights reserved

The "dirdiff" package has what would appear to be a newer version...

    # Copyright (C) 1999-2004 Paul Mackerras. All rights reserved.

...but diffing the two shows some code in tkcvs's version that is
not present in the dirdiff package's, so it seems the two have
diverged somewhat.

It is confusing to have what amounts to two slight variations of the
same program (/usr/bin/tkdirdiff vs. /usr/bin/dirdiff) installable from
the same (Debian) repository. Ideally, these two versions would be
merged into a new one containing the best of both; short of that, either
one of them should be dropped from the repository, or a clear
explanation offered to the user on why they would want one or the other.

(Note that this situation is similar to the one that existed with the
tkdiff and tkcvs packages until recently; the former package was dropped
in favor of the program bundled in the latter.)

Please re-assign this bug to the dirdiff package if appropriate.
