Package: irda-utils
Version: 0.9.18-12
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
The manpage of irattach mentions an old driver (smc-ircc) which is no longer
distributed in the irda-utils package, while the newer driver that replaces it
(smsc-ircc2) is not even listed in the manpage.
People installing irda-utils are befuddled by the apparent incompleteness
of the irda-utils package, which installs correctly, whereas irattach never
finds smc-ircc and exits in error.
Considering that
a) some people might still have an old installation of irda-utils built
with smc-ircc;
b) most documentation that can be found on-line, especially the "linux
infrared HOWTO" by Werner Heuser, was written at a time when smc-ircc
was the standard driver, but will be updated to reflect changes in the
distribution package at best very slowly, if at all;
we suggest to update the manpage for irattach(8) as follows:
REPLACE:
---
smc-ircc SMC IrCC controller driver (options: ircc_dma, ircc_irq).
This chipset is used by e.g.:
Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook 635t Sony PCG-505TX
---
WITH:
---
smc-ircc, smsc-ircc2
SMC IrCC controller driver (options: ircc_dma, ircc_irq).
This chipset is used by e.g.:
Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook 635t Sony PCG-505TX
Current versions of the package irda-utils use smsc-ircc2; older
versions rely upon smc-ircc.
---
This change minimizes the editing work required to bring the manpage up
to date.
