There was a similar issue with an xchat NMU I did: http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?&pkg=xchat&ver=2.0.4-1.1&arch=m68k&stamp=1065230515&file=log&as=raw (also on kullervo; this log lists the gettext version as 0.12.1-1) I did a quick test on crest's unstable chroot and it looks like at least my problem isn't reproducible there (installed version 0.12.1-6); I've asked debian-admin to install all of xchat's build dependencies there so I can do a manual build and be able to give a definite answer.
