I had been using timidity from Debian 2.2 stable release at the time, and it sounded perfectly. Damn, it was the BEST performance of what I got with any software MIDI players I've tried (standard media player that comes with Microsoft Windows [tm] Millenium Edition gave just a funny noise, and Yamaha OPL3 FM synthesizer built in my soundcard definitely sucks). Now I'm strongly disappointed with the latest changes...
