I did go for this solution which was pretty simple. I added on the top
of my debian/rules:

#+BEGIN_SRC makefile
# Hack to ensure Python stuff to be installed in the right place
DEB_PYTHON_DESTDIR = $(CURDIR)/debian/$(cdbs_curpkg)
#+END_SRC
