I don’t think git remotes are like hg subrepos.  IIUC, git remotes are
paths to remote repositories; in Mercurial, that’s done by adding
entries to the paths section of the repo’s .hg/hgrc file.

Mercurial subrepos are something like Subversion externals or git
submodules.
