This is not possible in the python directories (/usr/lib/python2.x/site- packages). However, if the packages ships .py files in a directory containing whitespaces and uses them, it is true that dh_python is likely to fail. My opinion is that shipping files in such directories is a bad idea anyway, but it's true the script could be improved.
