Ok so it is a local install of an old or broken version of python in /usr/local/bin, or something of the sort. I suppose I could make debhelper use an explicit path to a python that we know is in debian, but I generally dislike that approach without very good reasons. I suppose sysadmins should be free to install their own python, even if they do break their machine in the process. So all I can do is close this bug report. -- see shy jo
