I would be surprised if AMD has anything to do with it, but FWIW, I have a very recent 3000 series CPU (newer than the 3700U), and it works fine with buster. If you have a very recent chipset, you might benefit from one of the backported kernels. But that's not usually the case with laptops. If I were you, I'd rather check that the remaining hardware is supported. Graphics, WiFi, etc.
