Debian takes code from websites with donation buttons, economic incentive options, kickstarter updates, support contracts, developer sponsorships, programs and projects of all kinds and general invitations to participate. Strips them all out. Then strait faced, delivers them to consumers who are never given the opportunity to know about any of it. Debian is sanitizing programmer's work for general consumption. This may be better than being a random website with incomparable, uncompiled source code. But it's not the strongest relationship, esp where economics are concerned.
