I occasionally do use this route, although I could email the package maintainers directly. Would it be possible to allow mail from arbitrary hosts as long as it has some special header, say "X-Debian-Pkg: foo" where foo matches the package being mailed? However, I wouldn't personally have a problem with it being blocked completely from non-Debian machines.
