At the moment it is difficult to see what any decision in that case will imply. However, please rest assured that GNU/Linux is only a kernel, and there's also effors being undertaken to port debian to the hurd, thus eliminating a linux kernel.
Please be also assured that the 'IP? is only present in 2.4.x kernels, so using a 2.2.x or 2.5.x kernel would probably remedy the situation.
