Hello Wei Gao, Debian is not a for-profit company, but a loose ocoperation of a few hundred people working together. Most of this work is (unpaid) volunteer work.
The usual way (before applying on the website) is to find a field that interests you and that you are good at. If you are good at coding you take, e.g. a piece of software (we call them 'packages') and adapt that to go with debian, and to fit in with the distributuion. of course there are also other tasks, like improving documentation, or fixing bugs in existing packages, or even helping to coordinate this loose cooperation. I therefore invite you to look at the debian homepage, and ot familiarise yourself with the ideas that stand behind debian, ideas like Freedom, and Community rather than Closedness and Commercialisation. http://www.debian.org/devel gives you an overview of development, of what is being done and where you can help. Once you found your place in there, and know what you want to do, and perhaps even have a package that you maintain, you can then apply on the website, and put your email address to join the debian team, if you are still interested. Hope this helps Robert (yes, I done it, i am a maintainer in application) -----Original Message----- From: li qun To: debian-project@lists.debian.org Sent: 6/11/02 8:16 PM Subject: Unidentified subject! Dear sir: My name is Wei Gao, I am an international student at an American University. I took a course on Network TCP/IP this spring, and I used the linux for the first time in my life. I really liked it, it's very robust, and efficient. I was just wondering if you can let me become an volunteer for the debian project and work on some projects. I am totally free this summer and I know how to program in C,C++, java, and I am also an computer science major. My main problem like other inernational students is I don't have much working experience. Therefore, if you have to let me show you an resume, I can't show it because I don't working experience. But if you can give me an chance to prove myself. I guarantee you that I can do a good job. Please consider me for an voluteer. Best wish to you!
