You can still create bugfixes and patches to improve the quality of the package and submit them to the BTS, so everyone can seem them. So I speak from my experience. Then you have still the possibility to ask the QA Team for help with this issues and try to contact the maintainer to get a decision from him. You still have one door left, that you haven't opened and where you haven't looked what's behind.
