Originally, the simple paper size names "A4", "Letter", ... referred to paper sizes with smaller margins/a larger printable area, but these sizes do not allow Duplex printing, jobs simply came out one-sided. Office applications only used the simple names for paper sizes as part of the document (not of the print settings). Trying to print these documents always gave one-sided output. To really get duplex output on HP inkjets one had to switch to special duplex page sizes (like A4.duplex), which once required extra user action and second, was not possible from many applications (like OpenOffice/LibreOffice). So I made the script to modify the PPD generator so that the default page sizes are the duplex ones and the former default page sizes get special page sizes for small margins (A4.SM).
This way more user's requirements are addressed, as more need duplex printing and not so many printing of graphical elements close to the borders. If you need the smaller margins and do not need double-sided for a certain print job, simple select the small-margin (SM) page size manually (or even a borderless page size if available). It would be indeed a bug if this change is applied to printer which under no circumstances is able to print duplex (no duplex unit built-in or as accessory).
