I cannot find the thread anymore but basically GNOME 3.x has extra requirement, which older graphics cards do not have. As suggested, you should pick another desktop environment. I would also avoid KDE. I am a happy xfce user, but MATE may work if you want to stay closer to GNOME 2.x (not tested) -M
