I am able to SSH into the computer when I lose the screen. The system appears
to be alive and well from a shell. If I issue remotely:

root@debian:/var/log# /etc/init.d/gdm3 restart
Stopping GNOME Display Manager: gdm3.
Starting GNOME Display Manager: gdm3.
root@debian:/var/log#

Results in my being logged out and back to the login screen. I can then log
back in again and I have my screen

I'm not sure where to look as Debian is so different then I am use to (Red Hat
stuff)
