Hello Tom, Rick, and the others, I've tried to add headphone detection support to snd-aoa for PowerMac3,4. The package is available at:
http://ristosu.wippiespace.com/pub/alsa-modules-2.6.32-5-powerpc_1.0.23+dfsg-2+2.6.32-29_powerpc.deb It can be installed with 'dpkg -i' and gets loaded by reboot. It contains both snd-aoa and snd-powermac (already somewhat tested). The latter is loaded when put into /etc/modules, in which case snd-aoa snd-aoa-codec-tas snd-aoa-fabric-layout snd-aoa-i2sbus snd-aoa-soundbus should be blacklisted. Try it, and tell me how it went.
