I had to stop using ubuntu 10.04 on my G5 because the beast would overheat in the middle of our winter ... and then freeze ... finally it rebooted itself. I reverted to Debian 5.0.4 ... and the problem seems to have gone away. I was getting fail messages about the installation of windfarm in the booting ... and from my googling, it appeared that the kernel involved was not supporting the fans. I got my version of ubuntu for the mac from here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/10.04/release/ and maybe I was premature and there is a work-around. I didn't know where to raise this subject, so I'm glad you did.
