Further experiments show that I can get some external USB keyboards to work, but not all of them. I have tried three external keyboards and two did not work, while one worked. Once I've got through a certain stage with booting, the internal usb keyboard also works. Some comparison: Old kernel (Debian 2.6.26-13lenny2) grep -i keyboard 20100211-0-dmesg [ 7.910715] usb 1-2: Product: Apple Internal Keyboard/Trackpad [ 9.944807] input,hidraw0: USB HID v1.11 Keyboard [HID 05ac:1000] on usb-0001:10:1a.0-1 [ 10.197455] input: Apple Computer Apple Internal Keyboard/Trackpad as /class/input/input4 [ 10.228827] input,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Keyboard [Apple Computer Apple Internal Keyboard/Trackpad] on usb-0001:10:1a.0-2 [ 10.335023] input: Apple Computer Apple Internal Keyboard/Trackpad as /class/input/input5 [ 10.360896] input,hidraw3: USB HID v1.10 Device [Apple Computer Apple Internal Keyboard/Trackpad] on usb-0001:10:1a.0-2 New kernel (Debian 2.6.32-5) grep -i keyboard ~root/20100211-1-dmesg [ 9.982718] generic-usb 0003:05AC:1000.0001: input,hidraw0: USB HID v1.11 Keyboard [HID 05ac:1000] on usb-0001:10:1a.0-1/input0 [ 10.164650] usb 2-2: Product: Apple Internal Keyboard/Trackpad [ 11.413302] generic-usb 0003:046A:002B.0006: input,hidraw3: USB HID v1.11 Keyboard [HID 046a:002b] on usb-0001:10:1b.1-1/input0 [ 61.348811] input: Apple Computer Apple Internal Keyboard/Trackpad as /devices/pci0001:10/0001:10:1a.0/usb2/2-2/2-2:1.0/input/input8 [ 61.483205] apple 0003:05AC:020F.0003: input,hidraw5: USB HID v1.10 Keyboard [Apple Computer Apple Internal Keyboard/Trackpad] on usb-0001:10:1a.0-2/input0 [ 61.594586] input: Apple Computer Apple Internal Keyboard/Trackpad as /devices/pci0001:10/0001:10:1a.0/usb2/2-2/2-2:1.2/input/input9 [ 61.733924] apple 0003:05AC:020F.0004: input,hidraw6: USB HID v1.10 Device [Apple Computer Apple Internal Keyboard/Trackpad] on usb-0001:10:1a.0-2/input2 I am no expert, but I wonder why the input Apple Internal Keyboard is loaded so much later. Note that the cryptofs questions comes up around at 10 or 11 seconds. So with the new kernel 60 seconds is much too late for it. It is not a timing problem because with rootdelay=120 I just get the input message around 180 seconds. Maybe a module is missing?
